Travelling to Scotland
Dundee airport is the nearest to Crail (25 miles) but it is small and offers only connections within the UK. Scottish Airways offers return flights to Dundee from London City Airport Edinburgh airport (51 miles) and Glasgow airport (94 miles) provide a wide range of UK and international connections. Car hire is available at both airports. Aberdeen airport (94 miles) has direct connections to many European countries. Prestwick airport (117 miles) provides connections to many European countries. Ryanair operates cheap return flights to Prestwick from London Stanstead. Inverness airport (166 miles) is the farthest from Crail. It handles UK flights only. EasyJet operates cheap return flights to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness from London Gatwick and to Aberdeen from London Luton. Rail The main east coast line from London to Aberdeen passes through Fife. The nearest station to Crail is Leuchars (16 miles) but if you wish to arrange car hire then Dundee would be more convenient. The National Rail Enquiries website will help you plan your journey. Road There are two main roads from England into Scotland. On the west the A74 crosses the border at Gretna, and becomes the M74 as it nears Glasgow. This would normally be the route used if you travelled up through England on the M6 motorway to Carlisle. On the east the A1 enters Scotland at Berwick-upon-Tweed and follows the coast round to Edinburgh. Sea http:If you are travelling from Europe it is worth considering using the Zeebrugge to Rosyth car ferry. Rosyth is only 40 miles from Crail and provides an excellent central location for starting and finishing a trip to Scotland. This service is due to start in Spring 2009 and will be operated by Norfolkline. From Northern Ireland there are ferries from Belfast to Stranraer (169 miles from Crail), operated by Stena Line , and from Larne to Cairnryan (163 miles) and Troon (117 miles), both operated by P&O Irish Sea . Road routes to Crail Fife Roads The map shows the main roads within Fife to Crail, and these are described below. You are advised to consult your own road-map for detailed information. Beware If you use an in-car Satellite Navigation system or web-based route planner, and set your final destination to the postcode of the clubhouse (KY10 3XN), you run the risk of being taken through fields on farm-tracks for the last part of your journey. To prevent this specify the postcode of the Golf Hotel (KY10 3TB) in the centre of Crail, from where the road to Crail Golfing Society is well-signposted. If your SatNav or route planner has the facility, you could alternatively specify that your journey to the clubhouse is to go via the Golf Hotel. From Edinburgh and the south (a) Cross the Forth Road Bridge on the A90 and travel north on the M90. Leave the motorway at junction 2A and proceed east on the A92. At the first roundabout take the third exit and travel via the A921 south towards Kirkcaldy. At the next roundabout take the first exit and proceed via the A915 to Upper Largo and then the A917 to Crail. From Glasgow and the south-west (b) Enter Fife via the the Kincardine Bridge on the A876. Travel east on the A985 and then north on the M90. Thereafter follow route (a). Alternatively, go east on the M8 to the Forth Road Bridge and then by route (a). From Stirling and the west (c) Travel east on the A91 to Milnathort. Proceed via the A911 to Windygates, the A915 to Upper Largo and the A917 to Crail. From Perth and the north (d) Travel south on the M90. Exit at junction 9 onto the A912, then via the A913 to Cupar, the A91 to St Andrews and the A917 to Crail. From Dundee and the north-east (e) Enter Fife via the Tay Road Bridge on the A92. Proceed via the A914/A919 to Guardbridge, the A91 to St Andrews and the A917 to Crail.
Crail to the clubhouse
The clubhouse is approximately two miles north-east of Crail at Fife Ness, the most easterly point in Fife. You will see from the map that the road out to the clubhouse starts at a sharp bend on the A917 outside the Golf Hotel. The initial few hundred yards takes you along Marketgate, with old houses set well back from the road on either side. The road then narrows and dips down past Denburn Wood on the left. You are now on Balcomie Road. The road rises past Roome Bay Avenue on the right and after passing Balcomie Links Hotel on the left you come to the town boundary. You are now on a long, straight section of road, with farmland on the left and a disused airfield on the right. After passing the tall building of Balcomie Famhouse on the left, the road becomes single track with passing places, and wends it way, past Craighead Links on the right and Balcomie links on the left, to the clubhouse. Take care on this last section; look out for oncoming traffic and use the passing places when necessary.
